We had the good fortune of connecting with Nat Comisar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nat, what do you attribute your success to?
I know that the value I bring is genuine. I am constant in my marketing. I exceed the expectations I’ve set.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first entertained the idea of a career in real estate I was at a low point. I just closed Maisonette, the most honored and decorated restaurant in the history of North America. I was bankrupt. I had 4 kids to support and was newly divorced. I was approached by Rob Sibcy who said “you know everybody, you need to sell real estate.” That was a shift I was not ready to make. However, a good friend said: “you have a choice. You can save your ass or your pride, but you need to pick one.” That may be the best advice I ever received.
My first year was terrifying. It was 2006 and the market was crashing. I made $9,000 that year and thought this was the worst decision I ever made. If nothing else, the restaurant business gave me the work ethic to grind it out. I made 30,000 calls in 6 months. I built a business one client at a time.
I often thought of my grandfather. I was 18 when I learned that he had to declare bankruptcy when I was a newborn. He retired as the president of both Gruen & Elgin watches. Then he made a poor investment which wiped out a lifetime of earnings. I always knew him as optimistic, hard working and forward thinking. He was happy. He and my grandmother showed me that happiness is internal and I could choose to look for the good as they did and keep a positive focus.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Cincinnati is one of 14 cities which represent all 7 major arts: Music, Sculpture, Painting, Literature, Architecture, Performing, and Film. It has more Fortune 500 companies per capita than any other city in the nation. We have an extraordinarily diverse group of restaurants. We have more public park land per capita than any other urban area in the US. We have the Reds, Bengals, FCC & the Cyclones and some of the best college sports teams in the nation. The Ohio river, Miami Rivers and outlying lakes provide a wealth of water related activities….
…and we only have a weekend?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
AV Stegeman (grandfather), Jack Wadsworth (cousin), Holly Stegeman (mother) and a host of others. Family matters, and on my mother’s side they have been and continue to be a source of inspiration and support.
