Meet Nicole Matlus | Founder/President Operation Lean On Me Non-Profit

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Matlus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Operation Lean On Me creates a profound social impact in the community by addressing the needs of its most vulnerable members. By organizing initiatives such as Thanksgiving meal distributions and winter clothing donation drives, the nonprofit uplifts underprivileged children and elderly residents in nursing homes, ensuring they have access to essential resources and support during critical times. Through its compassionate approach, the organization fosters a sense of care and connection, alleviating hardships for those in need while inspiring others to contribute to a more inclusive and supportive community.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Operation Lean On Me is more than just an organization—it’s a reflection of my journey and a movement born out of resilience and hope. Growing up surrounded by poverty, addiction, and alcoholism, I witnessed firsthand the struggles that can consume individuals and families. Those experiences shaped my desire to create something that could provide real, tangible support to those in need. Along the way, I’ve learned difficult lessons, like the isolation that often comes with being the one to step up and lead, but those challenges only strengthened my resolve. Operation Lean On Me isn’t just a fleeting idea; it’s a vision for change that I hope will one day extend across the United States, offering care, resources, and hope to communities everywhere. My story is proof that out of hardship, powerful movements can arise, and I want the world to know that this is only the beginning.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love the city of Cleveland and would make sure my best friend experienced all its highlights. Being a sports fan, we’d definitely catch a Browns football game or a Cavaliers basketball game to soak in the electric energy of the fans. A visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Museum of Art would be a must, showcasing the city’s vibrant culture and history. We’d explore the West Side Market for some unique local flavors and immerse ourselves in its bustling atmosphere. For brunch, Lagos and Café Blanc are my go-to spots—offering delicious food and a great vibe. Cleveland has so much to offer, from its rich arts and culture to its incredible food scene, making it the perfect city for an unforgettable week!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to take a moment to send a heartfelt shoutout to all the amazing organizations and individuals I’ve had the privilege to work with on this journey. To Guns Down Hopes Up, Southeast Cleveland Resource Center, Walls of Love, Mentors4Minorities, Great Minds Think Different, Hit the Streets Organization, and The Builders Program—thank you for your commitment to uplifting our communities and making a difference. To Myke the Psych, Charles White, Odetta Fields, Holly Suzanne, and my incredible project coordinator Ashley Edmonson, your guidance and support are invaluable. To my amazing business partners on our upcoming Christmas project, The Noun and Ifixugly, I’m so excited about what we are building together.
Most importantly, to my beautiful children and my entire village—you are my rock, my motivation, and my why. None of this would be possible without your love and encouragement. Together, we’re showing the power of collaboration and the strength of community! Thank you all!
