We had the good fortune of connecting with Pietro Leddi Rullampo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pietro Leddi, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
One of my favourite quotes is definitely from Leonardo da Vinci about Pareidolia, the tendency of our perception to make sense of unclear external stimuli, interpreting these in forms that may be clearer to us.

“If you look at any walls spotted with various stains or with a mixture of different kinds of stones, if you are about to invent some scene you will able to see it in a resemblance to various landscapes adorned with mountains, rivers, rocks, trees, plains, wide valleys, and various groups of hills. You will also be able to see divers combats and figures in quick movement, and strange expressions of faces, and outlandish costumes, and an infinite number of things which you can then reduce into separate and well conceived forms.”

This quote has been applied in various forms and fields and has certainly also influenced me a lot in my artistic journey. Being able to extrapolate alienating forms from nature and rework them is certainly a very powerful tool.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Having a distinctive trait is not easy, a keen eye always perceives the source of inspiration. One thing that I like to think of as my speciality is being able to cognize different forms of language within a work, experimenting and inventing.
This was certainly an easy thing as it is as exciting as playing, but a game is not a job and perhaps this is the biggest challenge that keeps coming up.
Being able to manage both is a lesson I am still trying to learn perhaps.
I would like me and my art to be appreciated in all the forms it takes, without it becoming a repetition for market logic.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Certainly it is a question that has to take into account certain variables, starting with the time of year. Living in a country like Italy, rich in history and landscapes, it is difficult to make a decision.
The Viareggio Carnival would certainly be one of the first options I would propose, with the fantastically shaped papier-mâché floats parading along the promenade between the sea and Art Nouveau and Rationalist buildings.
The sea and the “macchia mediterranea” with its wild places that often fit into archaeological contexts as in the case of Populonia, stopping at an “osteria” and eating local fish soups such as “Cacciucco”.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There would be so many words and thanks to those who helped me get here, family, friends, music and the study of culture and art in general. Fundamental to my artistic growth was certainly my grandfather Piero Leddi, a post-war painter, who gave me direction and gave me a good understanding of the secrets of the trade thanks to the opportunity to work in his studio.
Also playing an important role was the Mammafotogramma studio, specialising in animation and video installations, which introduced me to the professional world.
Last but not least, my hometown Viareggio, which with its sea and carnival has always filled my life with colour and with its popular art of papier-mâché, the melancholy of the sea in winter and the happiness of finding it again in spring.
