Meet Rufus Blaq | CEO, Artist, Songwriter, Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rufus Blaq and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rufus, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risking taking is paramount in this business of music. As a kid in 1992 I got on a greyhound with $6 to my name and headed to Atlanta Georgia from Youngstown Ohio. I know I had what it took to be GREAT! Back then what I did was unheard of but it was well worth the risk!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My dream was to be a superstar artist in the beginning. I practiced relentlessly at songwriting because I preferred writing my own music. I got so good at it that a man by the name of Kevin Wales who managed kids groups called A.B.C (Another Bad Creation) and Kronik asked me to write for them. When I was discovered by Chad Dr. Suess Elliott and moved to NYC I was asked to write for so many people! I didn’t like the idea at first but it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. It was a long and tough journey in this business for me. It wasn’t easy. I struggled with alcohol and drug addiction as did many of my peers in this business but I continued to master my craft of songwriting and producing. I was signed to Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis’ label Perspective A&M records. I learned so much from my then A&R and now manager Jr. Regisford, Jam, Lewis, and Prince Charles Alexander. They taught me how to reinvent myself. I realized I was more than just an artist! I’ve written for some of the all time music greats, Salt n Pepa, Destiny’s Child, Faith Evans, Angie Stone, Omarion, B2K, Marques Houston, Jhene Aiko, Bow Wow, Mila J, J. Brown, Doug E Fresh to name a few. What I want the world to know about my label and brand Silent Success entertainment is we are more than music, we are a movement! Our music is simply….Timeless. ~Selah
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would love to take them to downtown Philly. Beautiful place to eat, and absorb the city of brotherly love. I would also take them on a 2 1/2 road trip to NYC to IMI studios in Manhattan. It’s an outstanding vibe there. I would take them to Ruth’s chris Steakhouse and also BBQ’s for the Hennessy wings! Lol food and high level creativity goes hand and hand in my book! I’m a simple man! Peace, tranquility, and good energy is the fuel to my creativity!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my wife & my parents. They’re my hero’s who continuously encourage, inspire and enlighten on this tumultuous journey in this music business! Without God through them I WOULD NOT BE HERE!
