We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Exel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Creativity has always been at the core of who I am. After spending years in the fashion and graphic design industries, I knew I wanted to build something of my own—something that reflected my passion for art, design, and education while allowing me the flexibility to balance work and family life.

Sara Ria Illustrations was born from my love of storytelling through art. I wanted to create unique, meaningful illustrations that capture emotions, memories, and individuality. Whether through custom artwork, branding, or surface design, my goal has always been to bring a personal touch to every piece, making art that resonates with people in a lasting way.

On the other hand, The Summer Art Factory was inspired by my desire to nurture creativity in others, especially kids. I believe art is an incredible tool for self-expression, problem-solving, and confidence-building. By introducing young artists to different movements and artists with each project, I hope to ignite their imagination and help them see the endless possibilities in art. It’s not just about making something beautiful—it’s about the joy of creating, exploring, and discovering.

Both of these businesses stem from the same core belief: art should be personal, inspiring, and accessible. Whether I’m illustrating for a client or teaching a group of young artists, my mission is to share the power of creativity in a way that feels meaningful and fun.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Art has always been more than just a creative outlet for me—it’s a way of telling stories, evoking emotions, and connecting with others. My work blends my background in fashion and graphic design with my passion for illustration and education, creating a unique style that is both personal and purposeful. Whether through Sara Ria Illustrations, where I craft meaningful artwork and design, or The Summer Art Factory, where I inspire young artists, my mission is to make creativity accessible and impactful.

What sets me apart is my deep appreciation for storytelling in art. Every piece I create—whether for a client, a brand, or a classroom—carries a thoughtful narrative. I’m most proud of the moments when my work resonates with someone on a personal level, whether it’s a custom illustration that captures a cherished memory or a student discovering their artistic voice for the first time.

Getting to where I am today professionally hasn’t been easy. Like many artists and entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges—self-doubt, financial risks, and the struggle to balance my creative passion with the demands of running a business. But I’ve learned that perseverance, adaptability, and trusting the process are key. Surrounding myself with a supportive community, embracing lifelong learning, and staying true to my artistic vision have helped me navigate the ups and downs.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that success isn’t about perfection—it’s about showing up, doing the work, and staying passionate even when things get tough. I want the world to know that my brand is built on authenticity, creativity, and the belief that art has the power to inspire, heal, and bring people together. My story is one of resilience, faith, and a deep love for creating, and I hope it encourages others to pursue what sets their soul on fire.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Granville, I’d make sure they experienced the best this charming town has to offer—great food, local shopping, scenic spots, and a little bit of history. Here’s how we’d spend the week:

Day 1: Welcome to Granville!
Check-in at The Granville Inn – My favorite place to stay! This historic inn, where I had my wedding, is full of charm, beautiful architecture, and rich history.
Dinner at Broadway Pub – We’d grab a spot on the patio and enjoy their delicious Bourbon Chicken while soaking in the small-town atmosphere.
Day 2: Coffee, Shopping & Scenic Walks
Morning at Station – Start the day with my favorite Lavender Honey Latte, the perfect mix of floral and sweet.
Shopping at Green Velvet – The cutest boutique filled with unique clothing, home decor, and perfect giftables. A must-visit for a little retail therapy!
Afternoon Stroll – Walking through Granville in the spring is pure magic! We’d take in the beautifully landscaped yards and charming homes for inspiration.
Day 3: Outdoor Fun & Family Time
Bike Ride & Playtime – We’d take the bike path west one mile to Wildwood Park, where the kiddos can run wild on the playground while we enjoy the fresh air.
Lunch at Day Y Noche – A perfect midday break with their refreshing Cucumber Margaritas and delicious Latin-inspired dishes.
Day 4: Exploring Local Gems
Visit Denison University – Take a walk around the picturesque campus, admire the historic buildings, and soak in the college-town vibe.
Granville Farmers Market (if it’s the weekend!) – A great spot to pick up fresh produce, baked goods, and locally made treasures.
Day 5: Relax & Unwind
Spa Day or Yoga – A little self-care, either with a relaxing spa session or a yoga class at a local studio.
Evening Drinks at Three Tigers Brewing – Great craft beers and a laid-back atmosphere to wind down.
Day 6: Day Trip to Nearby Attractions
Visit Dawes Arboretum – Just a short drive away, this breathtaking arboretum offers scenic trails, gardens, and a peaceful escape into nature.
Dinner at The Buxton Inn – Another historic gem with cozy vibes and amazing food.
Day 7: One Last Stroll & Farewell Brunch
Final Walk Through Granville – One more peaceful stroll through town, soaking in the charm before heading home.
Brunch at The Granville Inn – A delicious send-off meal in a beautiful setting before saying goodbye to a perfect week!
Granville is such a special place, blending small-town charm with amazing food, shopping, and outdoor experiences. It’s always a treat to share my favorite spots with friends!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this Shoutout Ohio feature to three incredible women who have shaped me into the person I am today: my mom, Sue Renner, my sister, Caitlin Trainer, and my elementary teacher and mentor, Julie Gold.

My mom, Sue Renner, has always been my greatest role model. Her servant heart, unwavering joy, wisdom, and deep faith have been a constant source of inspiration. She has shown me what it means to love selflessly, support wholeheartedly, and live with purpose.

My sister, Caitlin Trainer, is my built-in best friend. Her strength, encouragement, and creative spirit push me to keep growing and dreaming bigger. I’m so grateful to have her by my side through every step of this journey.

Julie Gold, my elementary teacher and lifelong mentor, played a huge role in shaping my passion for creativity. She saw potential in me from a young age and nurtured it, instilling confidence that has stayed with me throughout my life. Her impact on my love for art and teaching is something I carry with me every day.

I wouldn’t be where I am without these amazing women. Their love, guidance, and belief in me have made all the difference, and I’m forever grateful.
