We had the good fortune of connecting with Serrin Joy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Serrin, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music and creating have always come natural to me. I was raised in a family where everyone does music, and I’ve attended arts schools my whole life, on top of always being around gospel musicians growing up. I have always had a great ear when pertaining to music and I love to learn and sharpen my craft. I also love to journal and in a lot of ways, music has been my journal. I have been able to release so many different emotions and built up feelings through storytelling/ songwriting. It’s really been my therapy. Being able to live off of what I do has been a major blessing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a trap soul/ floetry artist. My songs are about real stories that have happened to me, and I make sure to be very detailed in my lyrics, especially on these new songs I have coming out! Most recently, I just finished closing my first tour! This was an intimate listening experience, that was a promotion tour for my upcoming EP that I am releasing towards the end of this year. It was a four stop prelude tour, in LA, NYC, ATL and I closed out in my home state, Cleveland, OH. I was so excited to bring rising talents along this journey with me, including Lorii Woods, Pettyy, Vertreace, Labrina, Dreek Jones, Alivia Blue and Jonathan Lewis. Not only are these artists hands down the “new wave” of music today, but they are also my friends. It was so awesome getting to put on my first tour alongside them! With each cities band killing the shows! Sounds Of The Culture out of Buffalo NY, an all female band for the Atlanta show and the Cleveland show including musicians from my hometown of Akron, OH (Grant Jackson, Goldframe Quis, Darrel Williams Jr, Richard Orr ||, Armani Works and my brother, Walter Scrutchings Jr.) With the final show being not only hosted by the hilariously funny, and Def Comedy Jam’s own, Jack Shepherd, but also it was on my 22nd birthday! It was so cool to see my supporters come out in each city! Big shoutout to my partner, Moh-Sheh! The whole tour was put on by a team of us two. I couldn’t have done this without you! Thank you.

I have been told that while I’m on stage, I am fierce, and really commanding of my space. I’ve been described most recently as a “night time fairy,” because my shows are very sultry and “night time esq.”, although my appearance almost always includes some type of florescent/angelic vibe. My shows are always live and never to a track, my mic is always on. What sets me apart from other artists, is that I pay attention to everything. The vibe of the room, the vibe any artist before me left on stage, etc. During my shows I tend to blackout, and it really is an outer body experience for me. I’m directing the crowd, I’m directing the musicians, I’m stepping off the stage, I really work the whole room. My shows are one of one.

I’ve gotten to where I am, simply from hard work and always wanting to learn. I never stop learning, I never stop receiving gems, I never stop trying to grow. That, and I stay prayed up. I always pray before any time I sing, when I wake up, before I make any big moves. God always gives me my clarity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ohio has the BEST fall season!!! I love any pumpkin patches, hay festivals, hay rides, corn mazes, sipping apple cider while apple picking, haunted house, etc. The trees are so beautiful during that time of year as well. It’s also the best weather because it’s not too cold, but i’s also still sunny out. I just love Ohio’s fall weather. Any place during that time I would say is great.

Also, in Downtown Akron a friend of mine Richard Orr, just opened up a new black owned fine dining restaurant called Dejuan’s! The food is delicious for great prices and atmosphere! I had the turkey chops, it is a very delicious spot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this article to my family and close friends. I appreciate your listening ears and companionship. Your support doesn’t go unnoticed! Thank you.
