We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Frederick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shelby, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was deeply rooted in both personal and professional aspirations. When I lost my position in human resources, I had a choice: either look for another job in a field I knew or take a leap of faith into something completely new. My heart kept pulling me toward the health and wellness space, especially after being introduced to the transformative power of massage therapy. This experience not only healed me physically but also addressed my emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, inspiring me to create something similar for others.

The concept of establishing a ‘healing oasis’ was a vision that I held from the very beginning. I didn’t just want to provide services—I aspired to construct a sanctuary where people could experience holistic healing in every facet of their lives. This vision evolved into Jewels of Wellness. My fervent desire to serve others at a profound level, combined with my passion for wellness, made the decision to start my own business feel like the most natural progression.

However, it was not just my personal and professional aspirations that guided me. I felt a profound calling from God to step out and create something of my own. My faith was a cornerstone in my decision-making process. I believed that by following the path He had set for me, I could serve people in ways that resonated with my purpose. My venture was not just a business endeavor, but a Divine mission to aid others. This unwavering faith, coupled with the unwavering support of my family, was instrumental in turning my vision into a reality.

I also had the support of my family, which was vital in helping me take that leap. They believed in my vision, encouraged me, and were with me every step of the way. That made all the difference in turning the vision into reality.

In short, the decision to start my business was fueled by a combination of faith, family support, and a deep desire to create an environment where fundamental transformation and healing could happen. I saw a need, felt the call, and trusted that the path would unfold if I took that first step.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been an incredible journey of growth, faith, and service, and what sets me apart is my comprehensive, holistic approach to health and wellness. I’m not just focused on one healing area—I aim to support my clients in mind, body, soul, and spirit. True transformation happens when we address all aspects of a person’s well-being. My work integrates faith, mental health, emotional resilience, and physical wellness into a comprehensive practice that reassures people they are in good hands, helping them heal deeply and live fuller, more peaceful lives.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work is the impact it has on others. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of helping women overcome trauma, manage stress and anxiety, and find their purpose through various programs, coaching sessions, and wellness resources. Witnessing a client experience a breakthrough is a powerful reminder of the profound impact we can have on each other. Whether through my Healing Circles, my books, or my speaking engagements, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside people as they rediscover their strength and wholeness, and it’s these moments that inspire me to continue my work.

How did I get to where I am today? It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. The turning point came in 2006 when I lost my position in human resources, and instead of seeing it as a setback, I embraced it as an opportunity to pivot into something new. I enrolled in massage therapy school, and from there, I expanded into mental and emotional health coaching, holistic wellness, and personal development. The journey has been full of challenges—learning how to build a business, managing the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, and constantly evolving to meet my clients’ needs. But through it all, my faith in God kept me grounded and focused. My family’s support also played a crucial role in helping me overcome those obstacles. They’ve always believed in me, even when I had moments of doubt. This journey has taught me the power of faith and perseverance, and I hope it can inspire you to overcome your own challenges.

Some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way are to trust the process, stay adaptable, and never lose sight of your purpose. Every challenge I’ve faced has strengthened my resolve and pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t anticipate. I’ve learned that setbacks are often set up for something more significant if you keep your faith and stay committed to your vision.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that I’m passionate about helping people heal and live out their God-given purpose. Whether through my wellness programs, books, or coaching, my brand is rooted in love, service, and a commitment to transformation. I’m here to provide a safe, nurturing space where people can experience true healing and growth. If there’s one thing I want people to take away from my story, it’s that no matter what challenges you face, with faith, perseverance, and the proper support, you can turn your struggles into triumphs. That’s the heart behind everything I do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Columbus, Ohio, for a week, I’d show them the best of what this city offers, from delicious food to scenic spots and cultural gems. Here’s how I’d plan the perfect itinerary:

Day 1: Breakfast at Katalina’s Café & Short North Arts District
We’d kick off the day with a delightful breakfast at Katalina’s Café, a local gem renowned for its delectable pancake balls and inviting ambiance. This unique culinary experience is sure to set the tone for an exciting day. Following this, we’d meander through the vibrant Short North Arts District, immersing ourselves in the local art scene, exploring boutique shops, and admiring the captivating street murals. The district’s artistic energy is truly contagious, making it a perfect introduction to Columbus’ creative side.

Lunch at North Market & Scioto Mile
For lunch, we’d venture to the historic North Market, a foodie’s paradise offering a diverse range of international cuisines and local delicacies. I’d recommend sampling some of the local favorites like Hot Chicken Takeover or the renowned Momo Ghar for a truly unforgettable culinary adventure. Post-lunch, we’d take a leisurely stroll along the Scioto Mile, soaking in the scenic riverfront views, lush parks, and captivating public art installations. For the more adventurous, the option to rent bikes or kayaks to further explore the area is always on the table.

Day 2: Franklin Park Conservatory & Lunch at Lindey’s
The morning would be dedicated to the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a serene haven brimming with lush gardens, captivating art installations, and a charming butterfly exhibit. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and connect with nature. For lunch, we’d head over to the elegant Lindey’s in German Village, known for its refined American cuisine and inviting atmosphere. The village’s historic charm adds a special touch to the dining experience.

Day 3: Hocking Hills Day Trip
A short road trip to Hocking Hills would be on the agenda for day three. We’d spend the day hiking through stunning trails, exploring the caves and waterfalls at Old Man’s Cave and Cedar Falls. It’s a perfect getaway from the city to enjoy the natural beauty of Ohio.

Day 4: Columbus Museum of Art & Easton Town Center
We’d visit the Columbus Museum of Art in the morning to take in its rotating exhibits, modern art, and sculpture garden. Afterward, we’d spend the afternoon at Easton Town Center, one of the best shopping areas in the Midwest. There’s something for everyone, whether it’s high-end retailers or local boutiques. It’s a great place to shop, grab a snack, or people-watch.

Day 5: Spa Day at The Woodhouse Day Spa & Dinner at The Cheesecake Factory
To help my friends unwind, I’d treat them to a luxurious spa day at The Woodhouse Day Spa, where we could indulge in massages, facials, and other pampering treatments. It’s the perfect reset after a few days of sightseeing. And to end the week on a high note, we’d go to my all-time favorite restaurant, The Cheesecake Factory. While their extensive menu is always impressive, my real highlight is the Turtle Cheesecake—rich, creamy, and topped with caramel, pecans, and chocolate. It’s the perfect way to end a day of relaxation and indulge in a little sweet treat.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my Dad, who passed away in 2022. Throughout my life, he was an incredible source of strength, wisdom, and love. His belief in my abilities was unwavering, instilling in me the confidence to do anything I put my mind to. His unwavering belief in my abilities pushed me to pursue my dreams, even when the path seemed uncertain.

My Dad’s words, “You can do anything if you put your mind to it,” have been a constant source of strength in my life and business. His belief in me gave me the courage to start my own business, knowing that I had his unwavering support. He was not just a father, but also my greatest cheerleader, and I owe a large part of my success to his guidance and the strength he instilled in me.

Even though my father is no longer with us, his words and spirit continue to guide me every day. This shoutout is a tribute to him—his love, wisdom, and encouragement will forever be woven into my story.
