We had the good fortune of connecting with Siobhan ” OneMama” Neilland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Siobhan ” OneMama”, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has been the guiding force in my life and career, deeply interwoven with my personal and professional evolution. As I ventured into the corporate realm, championing diversity and inclusion, I felt like a navigator charting unknown seas. Believing these principles could revolutionize corporate culture and align with my own values, the journey was both daunting and exhilarating. This challenge ignited my passion and determination, leading me to develop the LEAP Methodology, which has initiated significant change in organizations like Amazon and numerous Silicon Valley startups.

The inception of OneMama.org International Health Center stemmed from a personal tragedy—the loss of my own child. This heartbreak propelled me towards a path of healing and hope, driving me to make a difference in sub-Saharan Africa. Offering healthcare in these underserved regions was a leap of faith, motivated by stories of resilience that demanded attention. Nights filled with fear and determination served as reminders of the daunting task ahead.

My foray into social entrepreneurship pushed me to my limits, inspiring the creation of platforms to support these programs. These endeavors mirrored my vision, deepest fears, and aspirations. They required me to trust in the unseen and invest my entire being into projects with uncertain outcomes yet promising significant impact.

Navigating this uncharted territory was marked by moments of self-doubt and emotional upheaval, with the specter of failure ever-present. However, embracing my vulnerabilities revealed my true strength and purpose. Each risk I took propelled me closer to a greater vision—one that transcended my personal goals to touch the lives of communities and individuals across the globe.

By sharing my story, I aim to illustrate the transformative power of embracing risk. This journey has sculpted my career and imparted lessons on resilience, purpose, and the importance of leading with empathy and heart.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In my career, I’ve been driven by a deep-seated passion for not just creating inclusive and empowering spaces but ensuring everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging. My approach integrates organizational development and talent acquisition with a strong commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and belonging. This commitment began in the corporate world and has seamlessly flowed into my work with OneMama.org and my social entrepreneurial ventures.

The transition from corporate to nonprofit and entrepreneurship was challenging but deeply rewarding. It was fueled by my belief in the power of inclusion and belonging to transform. Through the ups and downs, including launching health centers in Africa and creating platforms for joy, I’ve learned the value of resilience, the importance of community, and the power of united efforts.

A key lesson for me has been the critical role of authentic leadership in fostering a sense of belonging. This understanding has guided all my work, from corporate consultancy to OneMama.org’s initiatives, influencing how I inspire change.

Ultimately, I want my story and brand to be known for their impact on making the world a more inclusive, equitable place where everyone belongs. My journey underscores that with passion, perseverance, and a commitment to inclusivity, we can drive significant change.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friends were visiting San Francisco, I’d make sure they’d experience the city in a way that captures its unique spirit and the beauty it holds, both natural and cultural. We’d kick off the visit with a morning swim at one of my all-time favorite spots over by the Sea Cliffs. There’s something about the open water there that’s both invigorating and deeply calming.

After drying off, we’d head to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. No matter how many times I see it, the view never gets old. It’s a must for any first-time visitor. Then, we’d spend the afternoon exploring Golden Gate Park. It’s one of the coolest parks I’ve seen, with buffalo, serene lakes, and amazing hikes. It’s like stepping into a whole new world right in the middle of the city.

Food-wise, San Francisco is a treasure trove of culinary delights. We’d hit up the Mission District for some of the best Mexican food outside of Mexico, and I’d make sure we stopped by my favorite hole-in-the-wall spots for authentic, unforgettable flavors. For drinks, the city’s rooftop has stunning views of the cityscape—perfect for those golden California sunsets.

As for nightlife, I’d take them to Motown on Monday at Madrone Art Bar. It’s an absolute blast, with everyone dancing their hearts out to classic Motown hits. Surrounded by good vibes and great people, it’s the best way to start the week on a high note.

Throughout the week, we’d explore more of what makes San Francisco unique—its diverse neighborhoods, each with their own character, from the laid-back vibes of the Haight to the bustling streets of Chinatown.

San Francisco is a city of endless discovery, and I love showing friends the blend of nature, culture, and adventure that defines this place. Whether we’re hiking coastal trails, savoring world-class cuisine, or simply soaking in the views, it’s about sharing those moments that make life here so special.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Throughout my journey, I’ve been blessed with the guidance of countless earth angels who taught me to channel my raw tenacity into discipline and to do for others what I wished had been done for me. It all began with a Native American elder introducing me to the power of vision quests and the indispensable value of community, teaching me that we cannot thrive in isolation and need to connect with something greater. This wisdom paved the way to encounter hundreds of mentors from the personal development and spiritual communities who inspired, coached, and reminded me to find my strength within by connecting to the community. Among these luminaries, Mama Jamira shines brightest; the extraordinary medicine woman around whom I built the OneMama organization. She has been like the mother I never had, guiding me not just in creating OneMama.org but in understanding the profound impact of nurturing and communal support.
