Meet Spencer Doepel | Founder of Ecoflys Black Solider Fly

We had the good fortune of connecting with Spencer Doepel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Spencer, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
The habits that help me succeed are proper sleep, waking up early, working out, and doing the hard part the first time. I truly believe that life is like a step stool. Holding up that stool is four pillars health, wealth, spirituality, and love. Without one the stool is unstable, take away two and the stool comes tumbling down.

My first habit of sleep is probably the most important thing all day. If I don’t go to bed on time and get proper sleep it’s harder to do everything else in the day. I want to be filled with energy to complete tasks not lackadaisical and mind fogged.

My second habit for success is waking up early. Chances are if you are like me you have a 9-5 on top of running your business. The morning can be a great time to get work done before the 9-5 grind. I wake up at 4 am every morning to make sure the larvae are growing correctly and to ship out orders.

My third habit of working out is hitting three of my previously mentioned pillars on the stool. If you work out most likely you will feel better about yourself physically and mentally. This makes you feel better about the health and love pillars freeing your mind up to focus on wealth and spirituality.

Finally, my last habit is a little weird. Doing the right thing the first time is crucial for me as a person and a business owner to achieve what I need to achieve. Doing the right thing the first time means filling out all sections of paperwork, and adding pictures to Google ad campaigns when you create them, it pretty much means that you not putting things off and procrastinating. When you procrastinate you forget and when you forget you don’t do.

What should our readers know about your business?
Ecoflys upcycles food waste into protein and lipid-rich feed for reptiles, chickens, and fish. We are most proud of our mission, to provide the best black soldier fly larvae products while helping the earth by capturing greenhouse gases. We have been in business since 2019 and have learned many lessons and overcome many challenges breeding the black soldier fly. unfortunately, we can not share much of what we have learned because the knowledge helps us grow the best black soldier fly larvae and we don’t want our competitors to get wind of our secrets.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was in the area visiting for the and I wanted to show them a good time I would take them to a few different places. On Monday we would throw axes at the Spins bowling alley in Springfield, Ohio. On Tuesday I would do a ninja running course in Canton, On Wednesday I would take them to an airsoft course in Medina. On Thursday I would show them the great breweries on the Cuyahoga River in Cuyahoga Falls. On Friday I would go to Quarters up in Akron to play some good old-fashioned Arcade games. Finally, on Saturday and Sunday, I would take them to the All Ohio Reptile Show in Columbus or the Clevland Reptile Show in Medina.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost I want to give credit to god. Second I want to give a big shout-out to my parents Paula and Ged Doepel. They have been very supportive of me in my entrepreneurial journey. Third The University of Akron, without the entrepreneurial programs and start-up competitions at The University of Akron none of this would have been possible. Fourthly the support of my friends and family. In the first few months of my business, I did an Indiegogo and raised approximately $5,000 to use toward my business. The generous donations of my friends and family will never be forgotten and I am very grateful for them. Finally, I would like to give thanks to my customers, I love my customers and enjoy it so much when they tell me there animals like Ecoflys black soldier fly larvae.
