Meet Spencer Wolfe | Film Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Spencer Wolfe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Spencer, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my personal success as well as success of my brand is consistency. Consistent in quality, communication and planning.
Although most success is gauged by how much personal profit you’ve accrued, I find that the best success is to strive for progress in quality assurance. If you can be sure to provide the best quality in your product(s) and to progress in your knowledge the profit will follow. Like the saying, “fame before fortune.”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a film director you want to set yourself apart, but how? The best way to set yourself apart is to go the extra mile. Do the work that others aren’t willing to do. You’ll find that a large portion of other creatives in a similar field are more about the easy route that won’t necessarily yield a better outcome. In other words they cut corners by not planning their film shoot and would rather wing it. Now there’s a time and place for everything but in this case I see this as a lack of motivation. It is important to keep your edge sharp. Some clients might not have the privilege of looking at your entire catalog of work and may only see some of it. So, if you’re lacking motivation on some projects and they don’t quite turn out the well, that might be the only body of work that your potential client may see which could affect your ability to book in the future. First impressions are everything.
I take a lot of pride in my preparedness on my projects and feel that’s what makes me Spencer Wolfe.
Some find that it isn’t easy to break into this particular industry and a lot of it sometimes comes down to luck. Opportunities can sometimes go unnoticed, so how can you decide which opportunities are worth it. I can answer this one easy. Opportunities are often disguised as work. Great things never come easy and if you want it you must be willing to lose that extra bit of sleep, miss out on the weekend, etc. It all circles back being motivated and focused. Do what’s hard and not what’s convenient.
I had to work for my placement in this industry and if you truly want it you will climb the ladder.
At the moment my career has been focused around Music Video Production. I took the concepts of film production and the techniques that went into producing your favorite films and applied them to the music video world. This has given my videos a different look than the music videos you would commonly find by music artists. I wanted to give them more of a “movie” feel. Something cinematic as if the video itself was extracted from a scene out of a motion picture. Doing this style of filming has catapulted my name in front of some of the biggest names in the industry and I hope to be a regular within the realm of music video directing someday.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In my hometown of Sidney, Ohio I would first show them the uniqueness and historic beauty of our popular local landmarks. These locations always acted as a muse to my work starting back in middle school. Although I live in a relatively small town of 25,000 residence, I don’t ever feel the need to migrate into larger cities. I think commuting is suffice and I always want to call Sidney my home. It is special to me and for my inspiration to stay closely connected.
Aside from the inspiration my hometown gives, I’d introduce my friends and visitors to some of my favorite spots to eat. I am after all a “foodie.” Nothing else makes me happier than the comfort of good eats and conversation.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe my success to my colleagues and clients. They always make sure to stay on task and are not afraid to push the envelope to achieve extraordinary feats as well as break the mold. In my line of work it is easy to stick with a formula you know works. However, that can limit you within a box that can sometimes blind you to the possibilities that dare to be different.
