Meet Teressa Doaty-Johnson | Canine Executive Officer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Teressa Doaty-Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Teressa, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think about risks as the scare tactic and barrier to happiness, success, and freedom. Risks charge our emotions in ways that can chase us away from or towards our dreams. I think risk is necessary for the reward, as rewards do not come easily and certainly are not free.
I have always been a risk-taker. I would never mind pushing the limit or boundary of situations or guidelines. As an only child, I often got my way, but I also built the gift of persuasion and learned that in a lot of cases, I could get my way. I have used this to my advantage in business and in life. I do not take no for an answer easily and always look for an alternative. There just has to be a way.
Opening downtown Cleveland’s first dog daycare was a risk indeed. I did not have an established pet business or client list but decided that I would be more regretful of not knowing what Paws Play could be than failing. Risks are good and can serve you well once you get through the pit in your gut.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve dedicated the majority of my career to operations, with a strong foundation backed by a master’s degree in business. My experience extends into roles as a facilities maintenance supervisor and manager, where I’ve gained valuable insights into vendor management, contracts, and project management. Also, leading the asset and configuration program with Greater Cleveland’s Regional Transit Authority allowed for enhanced skills in budgeting and capital fund distributions.
My journey started in the Air Force, where I served for seven years as an aircraft electrician. The military instilled discipline, precision, and a commitment to excellence that have shaped my professional approach. Leading teams and providing top-notch customer service are not just aspects of my job – they are my passions. Throughout my career, I’ve faced challenges, including the unprecedented times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Leading teams during such difficulties required resilience and adaptability. Perseverance became my guiding principle, and the idea of not getting through was never an option.
My career path may not have been easy, but each challenge has been an opportunity to learn and grow. I’ve honed my skills in navigating complex projects, managing diverse teams, and maintaining facilities to the highest standards. The journey may not always be graceful, but I am unwaveringly determined to land on my feet. What sets me apart is not just my skill set but my unwavering commitment to overcoming obstacles. I want the world to know that I am not just an operations professional and businesswoman – I am someone who thrives in the face of adversity, ensuring that challenges are not roadblocks but stepping stones to success. My story is one of resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I imagine a weekend with my best friend visiting Cleveland one that promises a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and excitement. Our time begins with a vibrant night at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s MIX party. Surrounded by captivating exhibits, pulsating music, and an electric atmosphere, we dance the night away, making memories against the backdrop of stunning artworks.
The next morning, we indulge in a delightful brunch at Pinstripes. With a menu boasting delicious options for every palate, we savor mouthwatering dishes in a charming setting. The culinary journey sets the stage for the day’s activities. Then for some more fun, we head to Top Golf for laughter and friendly competition. The combination of golf, games, and good company ensures a lively and entertaining experience.
To embrace the serene side of Cleveland, we make our way to the lake for a relaxing paddleboat ride. Gliding across the water, we soak in the views and enjoy a leisurely afternoon. As the sun begins to set, we prepare for a sophisticated evening at Sora. With its sexy and elegant ambiance, the restaurant offers a culinary masterpiece that satisfies our taste buds. Each bite is a delight, and the intimate setting sets the perfect tone for a memorable dinner. To round off our weekend, we decide to catch a sporting event. Whether it’s cheering for the Browns, Guardians, or Cavs, we immerse ourselves in the excitement of the game.
This weekend is a testament to the diverse offerings of Cleveland – from the cultural richness of art and museums to the delectable dining experiences and the thrill of sports. With each moment carefully curated, our time in Cleveland becomes a cherished chapter in the book of our friendship.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
While not the most creative or original answer, it is the most honest. I would have to dedicate this shoutout to my mom. She is an absolute gem in every way. I grew up in the inner city of Cleveland in a single-parent household. I was afforded the privilege to believe we were rich. It was the small things that made my life growing up easy, and I certainly understand the hard work it really took to make it feel that way.
I watched my mom go to work daily as a bus driver, and along the way, she was consistent in her message that I was going to college and that she wanted more for me. I was consistently encouraged and held accountable to do my best. My home environment was positive, and no matter what it was that I said I wanted to do, I was never met with doubt. It was not until I was older that I realized that space gave me the audacity to dream.
I mean really, who begins their first pet care business with a brick and mortar in the middle of downtown Cleveland without so much as one client? This girl! When I told my mom that I wanted to open Paws Play, she quoted Robert Kiyosaki from Rich Dad Poor Dad, stating, ‘The poor dad tells his child to get a job, the rich dad tells his son to start a business. You can do it! Whatever you need from me, I’ve got you.’ Volunteering for over two years until we could afford to pay her, performing as our morning opener with a smile, and being a solid rock every day, are just a few reasons this is dedicated to her.
