We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Schacht and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tim, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Ever since I was 3 years old I’ve wanted to be a farmer. When I was little I enjoyed watching our neighbor and other farmers using their cool farm equipment to grow crops and dreamed of one day doing it myself. My desire to start Ohio Till Farmstead stemmed from a deep-rooted commitment to promoting environmental stewardship and supporting local communities. By establishing a farm that prioritizes organic agriculture techniques, we not only contribute to the health of our land and ecosystems but also provide consumers with nutritious, responsibly grown food.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey from being a diesel mechanic to working in an architecture firm and eventually becoming a farmer is a testament to my adaptability, determination, and passion for pursuing my dreams.

What sets me apart is my diverse background and experiences. Starting as a diesel mechanic equipped me with valuable mechanical skills and problem-solving abilities. Transitioning to architecture allowed me to explore my creativity and design capabilities, while my time at The Ohio State University provided me with a strong foundation in higher education and professional development.

I’m most proud of my ability to pursue my passion for farming while still maintaining a full-time job. Balancing the demands of my job at The Ohio State University with building and managing a farm business is no easy feat, but it’s a challenge I’ve embraced wholeheartedly. This ability to multitask and prioritize has been crucial in my professional journey.

Ultimately, what I want the world to know about me and my farm business is that it’s a reflection of my passion for farming, my dedication to hard work, and my commitment to building a better future for myself and my community. My story is one of perseverance, innovation, and a deep love for the land.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If my best friend was visiting the area, I would want to show them the best of what Uptown Marysville has to offer, focusing on local gems and attractions that highlight the community’s spirit and charm.

First and foremost, we would start our day by catching a movie or performance at The Avalon Theatre. Not only is it a beautifully renovated historic venue, but it also holds a special place in my heart as I contributed to its renovation during my time as a designer. Knowing that the popcorn we donate from our farm adds to the experience makes it even more special.

After enjoying some entertainment at The Avalon, we would explore the vibrant Uptown area, making sure to stop by the local breweries and restaurants. Leon’s Garage, Illmanored Brewing, and Homestead Brewing are all fantastic choices for grabbing a drink and soaking in the lively atmosphere.

For breakfast or lunch, we would head to Yeasty Boys Deli, where they serve overnight oats made with OTF oats from our farm. I also really enjoy all their sandwiches. If they had a sweet tooth, we would grab a cake or pastry from Kitschen Bakery, another local favorite that sources ingredients from our farm. Supporting local businesses like Yeasty Boys Deli and Kitschen Bakery is important to me, and their use of ingredients sourced from nearby farms adds to the experience.

We would also take the time to visit other charming cafes and small businesses in Uptown, such as Plum Home and Union Station 1820, to experience the unique offerings of the local community.

No visit to Union County would be complete without exploring the covered bridges that dot the landscape. These historic structures offer a glimpse into the area’s past and provide a picturesque backdrop for outdoor adventures and photography.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family, whose unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental in the journey of starting Ohio Till Farmstead. Their belief in my vision and their willingness to lend a helping hand, whether it be through providing moral support, lending physical labor on the farm, or offering invaluable advice, has been truly invaluable.
