Meet Violet Sky | Singer and 80s revival influencer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Violet Sky and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Violet, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think staying true to yourself! My love of the 80s is something that is a part of me genuinely. When I record my music, or create content for social media, I want it to be as authentic to the 80s as I can get it. Even though authentic 80s stuff isn’t what’s desired in the mainstream, it doesn’t matter to me because when you create something you believe in it will find the right audience!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hi! My name is Violet Sky, and I’m a singer from New York City. I also run an Instagram and Tiktok page under @glitterwave80s, where I share my 80s lifestyle with the world! With everything I create, I try and keep all of the details as accurate to the 80s as possible. I dress in 80s fashion everyday, have a perm, and even drive a 1992 camaro! With my music, all of the tracks were written and produced in the late 80s by keyboardist David Bravo of the band Shy Talk. They never were released back then, so 30+ years later we recorded my vocals on them and changed nothing else! It’s been an amazing opportunity to work alongside an artist that created music that means a lot to me in his band, and revive all of these songs for a new audience today. I will say, social media has been a big part of how I’ve been able to connect with so many people that share the same vision as me creatively, and I’m really thankful for that!
I started my social media journey in the beginning of 2018, when I was a senior in high school. I didn’t have any friends that liked the same things as me, so I created my Instagram and hopes that I could find some. As time went on and I started posting more about my 80s life I found there were other people out there that dressed the same way as I did and that was really cool! As time went on, I got a TikTok and the more I posted about my 80s life I ended up being able to build a platform of people that all really loved the decade too.
Because of my social media presence, my producer David found me after I posted a lot about his band Shy Talk from 1985. I had always been a singer, but I never had an opportunity to record original music before. This music project has meant a lot to me because these songs wouldn’t have been heard by a new audience if he didn’t trust in me to record them, and it’s been great to work with him on his music that he put alot of work into back when he first produced it.
Some lessons I’ve learned is to stay true to yourself, never give up, and find something you believe in and really go for it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I’m from New York City, I’ll name Some places near me! Usually when my friends visit (especially if they’re from the 80s community), I take them on a grand tour of all the thrift stores we can possibly find! That, and record stores too. Movie locations are always fun to visit as well, and here in NY we have the Ghostbusters firehouse, Desperately Seeking Susan was filmed here and Katz’ Diner from When Harry Met Sally. It’s always cool to get to visit places you’ve only seen in films, it almost feels like you get to be in the movie!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m dedicating my shoutout to a few amazing people- to start my friend Antonio Vellato! Who recommended me for this opportunity. My producer David Bravo, who wrote and produced all of my music back in the late 80s, and all my amazing friends in the 80s community.
