We had the good fortune of connecting with Yolanda Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yolanda, what’s your definition for success?
My definition of success has changed over the years. I used to think you achieved success by climbing the ladder in your profession and reaching the top. I thought success was measured by a certain pay threshold. But the older I get; the more I believe happiness comes into play. If you love what you do and are happy doing it, fulfilled by it, and making an impact with it… that is success. Personal happiness and a work/life balance has become more important to me. That’s what it’s all about. The stress of climbing the ladder and hanging on for dear life to stay there can be debilitating and unhealthy.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a journalist, you want to tell the story. You want to right the wrongs, expose the evildoers and change your community for the better. That’s what we do, and I love that about my profession. It’s not an easy gig, in fact, it’s exhausting. But the thrill of breaking a story or using your platform to help others never gets old. It’s rewarding.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an animal lover so the first place I’d take someone is the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. What an incredible zoo we have. We’d spend time taking in the sights and sounds of the Zoo. Consignment shopping is definitely on the list. Our area has many little shops and stores with preowned or antique items. It’s exciting to explore and find hidden gems from the past. When it comes to food, the possibilities are endless in Central Ohio. We have so many fantastic restaurants that it’s difficult to chose. We’d just hit up a different restaurant each night. For Mexican food, there’s a little place called Lupita’s in the Merion Village area. The owner’s name is Ed and the restaurant is named after his mother. It’s authentic and delicious. Another restaurant on the list would be Basi Italia. It’s a little place hidden away in Victorian Village. I’d definitely visit the North Market for endless possibilities. Cocktails at a rooftop bar, skiing at Mad River Mountain and candle-making at Penn & Beech in the Short North.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d have to give the credit to my parents. They have always been my support system. For some reason, I’ve had confidence issues all my life. My parents have pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, they’ve counseled me and at times forced me to do things that I was afraid to do. They’ve been there through all of my ups and downs, and I’ve never had a day where I thought I couldn’t turn to them for love and encouragement. Praise God for good parents. I hit the jackpot!
