We had the good fortune of connecting with Zeus The Barber – Jesus Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zeus The Barber, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting a business is a challenge I accepted and a complete life change, it requires a lot of dedication and full commitment. I had to make many sacrifices to achieve my dream of becoming a business owner. It all began when I was a former company employee for 5 years. I spoke to my boss about my wish to become a manager of his company. I was told that he was willing to become my mentor to show me everything I needed to know to become a manager, but yet he did not commit to that promise just because in his eyes, I was too young to be a leader. I wanted to prove them wrong somehow, so I dedicated myself to my side hobby as a barber. I started cutting hair at the age of 18. My first client was myself. I gave myself my first self-cut and I fell in love with it as time passed by. I went to Tri-C Community College for business and management. One day, I went to the elevator. I saw a sign that said, “Did you know that you can finish barber college in one year?’’ That sign inspired me to attend barber school. Sometimes, I wonder why I became a barber. Whether it was the desire to be a leader, transforming their image / their entire day by cutting their hair or having amazing conversations that can help them throughout their daily lives. It became extraordinary how everything started going for me. I was able to network and learn from other people’s experiences. Little by Little, everyone who came to me suggested that I should start my own barbershop right after barber college. It was not easy, It took a lot of dedication and a whole change of mindset to be able to start a barbershop. It’s always a risk to open up any business, but sometimes those risks are a learning experience and I had to discipline myself to make something happen. This all came from learning to save money, becoming patient, having a goal, and sacrificing things that would push the due date of accomplishing my dream of becoming the owner of my own barbershop.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Allow me to say that it took me 10 years to be able to open up my first barbershop which I decided to name “Royal Kutz Barbershop”. Where did the name come from? My wife and I went out to eat and started thinking of a name for it. We came up with the word “Royal” and I began to think about it. This came out to be something great. I was meditating on the words “Royal Kutz” of the many things this word could mean and what I would want for it to mean. and then I said, “I want it to be a place where it isn’t just about the quality of the haircuts it’s about the experience as a whole walking into a space where you’re not just another customer, but a valued member of a community. Where moments of connection & conversations flow freely, & friendships are formed. That sense of belonging & feeling of being part of something bigger than just a haircut. An industry that’s constantly evolving & staying ahead of the latest trends. Most importantly, it’s about the relationships. A barbershop isn’t just a place where you go to get your hair cut, it’s a place where memories are made, stories are shared, & where laughter fills the air. It’s a place where you feel welcomed, appreciated, & valued.” Later then, I began to think about the service we could provide in the barbershop. I was very convinced of the name of the shop. We don’t just offer a haircut only, but we can change someone’s image, to see a smile at the end of the service, to give them an experience they have never seen before. I believe getting your hair done should be a relaxing time, creating a space where people can feel comfortable with themselves and their barber or stylist is another big reason I wanted to create that for my clients. It’s important that my client know that they can come here, and be their authentic self while getting to relax and unwind. I would love to bring new things to the barber industry and think of new ways of being different than any other barbershop. I love this industry because there’s always something new that comes out to provide the clients. Throughout the journey, this can be draining and requires a lot of effort when things don’t go as planned. Some goals take longer than others, but I’m filled with joy to open my first barbershop and change the world one haircut at a time. Does it STOP there? No. I am still learning as time passes by and still adjusting myself to this new journey. In addition, I thought that my barber skills would be enough but it was not. Now, I am adapting to growing my business skills. I went from asking people who own a business to watching YouTube videos to change my mindset and have the business flowing properly. Now, I understand why we were told to learn as much as possible, it will eventually be needed. We never stop learning. In a business, it’s always recommended to have a business plan because it will act as your guidance for your business. I later began to look for a location, with a high-traffic area where the barbershop could be known and a safe area where customers could come without worrying about their surroundings. This process took about three months. I came across the Facebook market on a building that was for lease. This commercial building was everything I was looking for. I had to be patient and wait six months to make the Grand Opening. It was an extraordinary feeling to be able to accomplish the goal and dream that I wanted for so long. Throughout this journey, I still wish to learn more and become greater than before. My next goal will be to open more barbershops and help the homeless. I would love to have a nonprofit organization to help those homeless in need of a transformation to their image. I would like to help them make a resume, and supply them with clothes and shoes so they could find a career. Not many people know how to start, they just sometimes need someone to give them that hand to begin their journey and transform their lives. I want to do things others aren’t able to do because I’ve been through difficulties in life and I love what I do. I want to “Change The World One Haircut at a Time”. It is not easy, but possible. It is never impossible. If I did it, others can do it as well. This takes a person who is dedicated, passionate, and has love for their career.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were to come visit the area, I would take him everywhere because I love to go out and experiment new fun places but if I were to choose I would recommend they visit the Mall to shop, the Zoo, the Aquarium, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the IX Center for attractions. To eat I recommend them to my favorite restaurants Long Horn, Empanadas, Don Ramon Mexican Grill, Twisted Taino and support our local small businesses. Last but not least I will take him to get transformed with a fresh haircut at Royal Kutz Barbershop by Zeus The Barber.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a big thanks and credit to Augberto Gonzalez with A & G Remodeling for helping me all the way from zero till the grand opening and for his best advice because without them I wouldn’t have made Royal Kutz Barbershop come to be.

Another huge shout-out would be to my wonderful wife Josmari Ramirez Conde for her 100% support, for her sacrifice day and night, her motivation towards me, and her help, I wouldn’t have achieved this goal.

Thank You! to my family, all my clients, and the community who supported me.
