Meet Montel Thompson | Youtuber, Podcaster, Streamer and Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Montel Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Montel, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Fort Knox, KY but raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, the oldest of 5 siblings. My mother was a nurse all of my life and my dad is a Vietnam veteran but worked in the auto industry until his retirement. My parents and family member knew from a young age that I was a blerd due to my love for comics. I read and collected comics since I was 9 years old. The love and support I received from my for my passions and loves encouraged me all through school, navy life up to today. This support also increased my curiosity into other nerdy genres that I didn’t know existed, including Dungeons & Dragons. In fully accepting being a blerd, I learned acceptance and empathy towards others, like myself, who were different and didn’t fit into societal standards
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My Blerdicorn journey officially began back in 2009. I wanted to create a YouTube channel due to the lack of older blerd channels on the platform that spoke about all things geek and nerd from a melanated perspective. I wanted to illustrate my love for all things nerdy and even encourage others to try creating something or supporting others who aspire to promote this message. When I started, I was nervous due to the how the YouTube landscape was, but once I stopped worrying about being famous, I focused on my message and showing my love and enthusiasm. My pride swells when I have the honor of meeting others like myself who were inspired and encouraged by my actions to try and pursue their passions. To get to where I am now wasn’t easy due to lack of knowledge on how to start, but I took it one day at a time, researching and inquiring how to progress and grow. One of my main challenges was being consistent in my message and always showing my love without being fake and disingenuine. I’ve seen many others who strayed from their message for clicks and follows that disappeared. I enjoy what I’ve done and how I’ve grown as a content creator. I would like the world to know that my motto “Stay Nerdy, Stay Geeky and Stay Sexy” is not just a catchphrase but my philosophy as a blerd from then till not until I am unable to do anymore and I want others to embrace this as will, without worrying about gaining the approval of others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As I reside in Norfolk, VA, I am surrounded by the seven cities. Each city has epicenters of restaurants, sites, shops and so much more. Depending upon you interest, you could literally travel, at most 30 minutes in any direction from here to find something from someone. One of my main spots I would take them would be Virginia Beach first to check out the beach and then I would take each day and tour a different city until we come back home. Then we would repeat certain places again. In Norfolk, its Waterside for night life and museums, Portsmouth for history, culture and food, Chesapeake for beautiful countryside and restaurants, Hampton and Newport News are almost twins with nightlife and food, and finally Williamsburg for history buffs.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
