We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Romines and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was to be able to be with my kids during the day, and have a business model that allowed me to work when I was able and wanted to. In the first few years, there were A LOT of growing pains. It took a really long time to be able to find the balance.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from other bakers is the fact I love to incorporate engineering aspects in to my edible art. Whether it’s making a cake move, light up, levitate, you name it, I have done it. I have middle kid syndrome 🙂 So I love things that are different and off the wall. That’s also why people come to me. I am not a sheet cake kind of girl, I’m the girl who makes someone walk in the room and the crowd says “HOLY CRAP!?!? That’s A CAKE?!?!” I am very proud of the fact I was recently granted a collegiate license with the University of Kentucky. I am the only baker in the state with a license to bake and sell their logo. Being a lifetime Kentucky fan, obtaining that license was one of the biggest accomplishments of my entire lifetime!
Making it as far as I have has not been easy. Owning a small business is not easy! From surviving a pandemic to trying to find a balance in this economy and my cost of goods having quadrupled. It. Has. Been. Hard. But, I just keep on keeping on. I am lucky to have wonderful friends and customers, they keep my head above water.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Recently, one of my best friends came to visit from Boston. My friend Sara, from Baking Impossible. We met while filming and became lifelong friends. We spent the weekend going to Keeneland, betting on the ponies and we also did a bourbon tour. We went to downtown Lexington and hit up a brewery to catch the Kentucky vs. Georgia football game and had some pretty stellar food. To me, there’s no better state than Kentucky! So to be able to show Sara how wonderful Lexington is, and share Keeneland with her, was priceless!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am no stranger to making sure my friends, family and loved ones get lots of credit when it comes to the success of my business! In the beginning, they were my bread and butter and they were who helped catapult me into relevancy. But especially the love of my life, Shawn. He is everything to me and I am nothing without him! He’s my rock, my supporter, my cheerleader, my runner of errands and the best child raising partner anyone could ask for! And my two kids, Titus and Larkin. They have sacrificed a lot to allow me to live out my dream. I will always be grateful to them! I love them so very much!
