We had the good fortune of connecting with Catherine Morningstar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Catherine, how do you think about risk?
I believe taking risks is a part of life. Risks I have taken were job related. I entered a very male dominated television career after college. I moved across the country for a job. I moved back to Ohio for a job. I took a risk opening a coffee shop later in my life. I did it to create my own opportunity instead of being reliant on an outside business for income.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My joy in my adult life has been the ability to self publish two of the books I have written. I have a couple more books that I am planning to publish soon. A dream would be to get these books into the mainstream as either books or possibly find a movie or television producer to make them into visual stories. I don’t have a specific genre that I write. I have written a political suspense novel, a novel of friendship, a novel about Marilyn Monroe and a series of children books. I have about eight other projects that are outlined but I haven’t put pen to paper yet on those ideas. My mind works in what I consider weird ways as far as creating a story. I can have an idea and within about ten minutes I can create a beginning, middle and end for the story. Those are the outlines I have waiting for me to bring to life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Dayton, Ohio has been my home city for about twenty years. I love when people from out of town visit me. I first like to take them to the Air Force Museum. I could spend an entire day there. I also love the parks that are all over the area. They are really built a lovely multitude of different parks and activities. In the summer I love the kayaking and in the winter they open a skating rink downtown. Of course a visit to this area would not be complete without a meal at The Pub at The Greene. The best “Fish and Chips” in the area. There are also quite a few local breweries to do beer tastings as well as a local minor league baseball team, The Dayton Dragons. I love seeing concerts and theatre productions downtown at the Schuster Center or a show at the more intimate Dayton Playhouse. Dayton may not be very large but it does offer a variety of activities for visitors and locals as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am definately not as successful in business as I would like to be at this point in my life, but all the successes I have had are reliant on the love and support of my children. They have been with me every step of the way for any pivot I have made in careers. I love having my coffee shop but my real love would be to see my books become successful and be able to become a full time writer and I know that my children would support me if I decide to make that change.
