We had the good fortune of connecting with Gwendolyn Rehm and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gwendolyn, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance is such a huge part in the season of life I am in. As a 32 year old small business owner, AND mom of 2 children who I am homeschooling I am very protective of my time at home with them. Growing my own business after leaving the formal teaching world was a leap of faith, but word of mouth has filled my studio and I am now looking to add additional teachers to serve the community who is looking for high quality music education for their kiddos of all ability levels. I’ve learned to not let my email box control me, to schedule my work time for after bedtime or when my husband is home with the kids, and to remove the commitments or distractions that are not adding value to our lives. Helping others understand my schedule is not traditional, but having the flexibility to decide when I’m working has been game changing for work life balance.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the things that sets me aside from other music teachers is the variety of experiences I’ve had in my upbringing and education. I did not fit the typical mold studying violin, bassoon, piano, and voice from middle school through college. The education world wants you to pick one thing and dedicate all your time to that, but having supportive parents who helped me break through the system has made me a better musician and person all around.

Being a private lesson instructor with a degree in education, I have a lot of experience with neurodivergent learners. I am really excited this year to have more time to dedicate to instructing students with ADHD and Autism as they deserve high quality music education as much as anyone else does.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d for sure hit up Can’t Believe It’s Vegan, Porch Growler, and the Franklin Park Conservatory.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to dedicate my shout out to my village who support all of my crazy ideas, who believe in my vision, and help make it happen.
