We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk as more of an opportunity. While obviously there is uncertainty when it comes to risk taking, I usually approach it with the thought process of what could happen and how much would it matter if it did. Since high school I have been going against the grain and taking small risks in my personal life and career. I have done things that aren’t considered the safe choice, like entering the workforce instead of college right away and it has paid off in ways that have fulfilled me and made me confident in my choices. I have also had to make moves within my career that may have felt uncomfortable or risky like changing jobs or starting my own business when I didn’t know the outcome. I have learned valuable lessons from these different risks and it has shaped me into the business owner and person I am today.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I currently own a head spa called Head and Heart Spa. With a background in cosmetology since 2007, I have always loved the industry, even after taking some time off to stay home with my children. When I felt the pull to get back doing what I love I found a new niche area within scalp care and health that I hadn’t explored in my past. Head spas were starting to gain traction and people were learning all about their scalp health and how it affects so much more. I knew I wanted to be a part of this movement. After countless hours of research and continuing education classes to support this new endeavor I knew I wanted to open my own business. It was scary and unknown territory but I thrive on new and exciting adventure and I was ready. I jumped right in and the ball started rolling very quickly. I do think looking back that I could have taken a little more time to iron out specifics and make sure all of the details were set and exactly how I wanted, but as an instant gratification person, there was no stopping me. I want the world to know if you have an idea, a dream, or a goal, it is reachable and you can make it happen. I listened to my gut, knew that my community would be a great place to open such a business and I put faith in myself and idea. While it may not have been easy every step of the way, it is one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life professionally.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Chagrin Falls, Ohio is a great city that I get to call home, and if you visit there are plenty of places to check out. Driving through out town is like placing yourself inside a hallmark movie. Quaint, sweet, and safe. You must visit downtown chagrin falls which has the beautiful falls to look at and and a town full of amazing shops and restaurants. You wouldn’t want to pass up a stop at the popcorn shop for local popcorn goodies and ice cream. There are also so many wonderful Metropark trails to hike and picnic at, which are good for all ages. A quick 30 min drive would take you to downtown Cleveland where you should take in a sporting event depending on the season. Great restaurants are plentiful like Dantes and Fahrenheit, or the Hofbrauhaus for a more casual, fun vibe. Before leaving town you should get a sweet treat at Cibiks Dairy Island. This family owned ice cream shop delivers delicious frozen treats with a friendly smile each time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While there are many people that have been along for my journey and I owe a huge thanks to, I wouldn’t be here without my parents. I was 16 years old when I told them I wanted to go to vocational school, then 17 years old when I told them I didn’t want to go to college and then 18 years old when I moved out to get my own apartment and start a full time job as a hairdresser. Anywhere along the way they could have struck my ideas down and told me I had silly dreams. Instead, they helped me get everything in order, expressed excitement and support and helped me achieve these goals. Thank you, mom and dad!
