Meet Jazz Lewis | Muscular System Specialist and Owner Of Intentional Fitness

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazz Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazz, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
There were a few major factors that contributed to starting my business. To give a brief back story, I have been in the field of exercise science and human optimization for about 12 years now. I had been working with my clientele (about 25 clients a week) at a steady pace. When I was exposed to Greg Mac and the muscular system specialist program in 2019, I learned how to intake and retain clients at a greater capacity. After working in his system for about a year my client load increased to about 40 – 50 clients a week and at the end of 2021 I had about 40 to 50 clients on a waitlist. This was my first indicator that I need to multiply myself so that I could better serve my community. I on boarded a team member under me and began unloading my waitlist to my colleague. My thought process behind starting the business was fact that I needed to capitalize on the demand that is in our community for our services. In addition I was inspired by the vision to provide incredible career opportunities for colleagues that can be apart of our team. I also wanted to start a business for the sheer excitement and enjoyment of building something from the ground up.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We have a 2500 square foot facility in the beautiful redwood forest of Arcata California. The X factor that sets apart from the exercise, personal training and physical therapy industry in our area is our extensive assessment process, our thought process and problem solving process regarding the way we address the muscular system, the passion, care and attention to detail we give to each and every one of our client, We also take pride in having unmatched state of the art and innovative equipment to challenge and optimize our clients muscular systems.
I would have to say I am most proud of the selfless drive and dedication of our team. We do unpaid study sessions, take time outside of work to do client check ins, and truly dedicate ourselves to our clients success. We have absolutely created a client first culture at intentional fitness and without a doubt it has aided in the success we have had to date.
It is a very long story of how I got to where I am now, and I can send you my about the owner that my coach had me write up but the short story is that I got into the exercise science world due to an injury and inadequate physical therapy. I became enthralled with the field and pursuit as many educational opportunities as I could learn more about it. I started in a 500 square-foot mother-in-law unit. Began building a clientele base while continuing to pursue additional educational endeavors and stacking on certifications. Opportunity came up to move into a 1200 square-foot space and I took a leap of faith. Built a clientele base in a waitlist up in that space and then built out a 2500 square-foot facility. On boarded, my first team member to do my waitlist and have been working on taking on more team members to fulfill the demand of the community. we are now in the process of purchasing our own space to build our own 5000 square-foot facility in the next year.
It has not been an easy process building this business. I’ve spent thousands of hours developing systems, refining process, building a brand, doing teambuilding and study sessions. I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours renovating spaces and a ton of money investing in this company. I have gone through 12 years of extensive education aside 12 years of building a clientele base. It has been the hardest, funnest, and most filling thing I could’ve asked to do in my life.
I’ve learned that perseverance, tenacity in an unrelentless drive to create are the things that have kept me going this whole time. I’ve also learned that team and a support bass are absolutely essential. You cannot do it on your own. I’ve also learned that being a business owner means you have a different type of freedom. You are free from being forced to clock in, clock out and be at the beck and call of your boss, but it does mean you are free to live your life the way you envision it. I’ve also learned that being a business owner means that you may work 10 times harder and longer than someone who is employed and I know this is cliché, but that does not feel like a job it feels like play and I truly don’t feel like I’ve worked a day since the age of 21.
The things that I want the world to know about our brand and our story is that we strive for excellence every day. Our goal is to nourish and nurture every client. We are the rock for our clients we stay empathetic, positive and encouraging so that our clients can continue pushing to reach every goal that they set. It takes a special type of person to do what we do and I’m so glad to be surrounded with that kind of person. Our story is early, and we have so much left to do and so much left to offer our community. Our future is very bright and it is going to be an exciting ride.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Humboldt county, we have in my opinion some of the most beautiful nature you can find. We have the beautiful redwood Forest (redwood park or the trees of mystery where you can find some of the largest redwood trees in the world), a place called Fern Canyon that literally looks like it was from the Jurassic era (and Jurassic Park was actually filmed there), we have some of the most pristine and unpopulated beaches on the west coast (moonstone beach would be my first choice). we also have an incredible art, theater, and music scene in this area. Any given Thursday, Friday or Saturday you can go to a handful, restaurants or breweries and listen to vibrant and soulful music. Some restaurants, I would recommend going to our brick and fire, Moonstone Grill, Lapin, or the carriage House. Some other awesome places to check out are the Arcata Plaza and old town in Eureka. We have vibrant Friday night markets where local vendors, food trucks, and musicians come to share their passion. We also have massive farmers market on the plaza every Saturday where our local farmers come to sell fresh produce. There will always be music playing at the Plaza. I would not recommend people come to humble county if they’re looking for a Gucci store or the things that you would find on Rodeo Drive. Have lots of parking, lots of friendly people, and very fresh air and clean water. Make sure to bring some hiking gear and a rain jacket because it can get pretty wet here.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely with out a doubt we would not be in the position we are in now with out the help, encouragement, and support of some incredible people.
First and foremost was my mother and my father. My mom was the one that encouraged me to pursue the field of exercise science when I began stating my interests. My father was one of the biggest contributors to helping build the facility we are in now
Second the unwavoring support from my amazing wife.
Third: Greg Mac and the exercise professional education organization for developing such a thourough, comprehensive, and well thought out process for working with clients
Fourth: Curtis Clay, Owner of Curtis clay training who has been an incredible mentor and amazing human. Curtis showed me that we can create niche tailored high end training facilities and do it with class and style
And last but not least is my business coach John Davidson, he has been with me every step of the way for the last three years as a driving force
