Meet Missy Mae Walters | Etiquette Instructor – Chapter Director for Cotillions

We had the good fortune of connecting with Missy Mae Walters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Missy Mae, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started the Greater Miami Valley Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillion because today’s children urgently need to learn how to build meaningful connections. In an era where digital communication often overshadows face-to-face interactions, it’s crucial for kids to understand the fundamentals of social etiquette. They need to learn how to treat others with kindness and respect, build self-esteem, and present themselves in the best possible light. Additionally, it’s important for them to develop a sense of empathy and show genuine care for others. Knowing what is appropriate to say and do in various social settings is essential for their personal and professional growth.
The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges, isolating children and limiting their opportunities for direct social engagement. Social media, while offering some benefits, often hinders the development of real-world interpersonal skills. These factors have created a pressing need for programs like the Junior Cotillion, which provide structured guidance in social graces, communication, and respectful behavior. Our chapter aims to equip young individuals with the tools they need to navigate social interactions confidently and effectively, ensuring they are well-prepared for the future.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Throughout my career journey, I’ve learned the invaluable lesson of patience. I’ve come to realize that life is filled with its ups and downs, and everything can change dramatically in just 24 hours. What’s most inspiring is that each setback often opens the door to new opportunities, even when it feels like you’ve hit a wall.
One of my primary goals has been to conquer fear. For example, I used to have a profound fear of drowning, so I took the bold step of becoming a certified scuba diver. This experience not only helped me overcome that fear but also ignited a passion for exploration and adventure. More recently, I faced my fear of flying, which led me to pursue lessons for my private pilot’s certification. Now, I approach challenges with a newfound confidence.
My journey hasn’t always been easy, especially when it comes to education. Growing up, my parents did not place a high value on academic achievements and didn’t expect me to graduate from high school. However, I was determined to forge a different path. Despite the odds, I persevered and eventually earned three Master’s degrees. This achievement is one of my proudest moments, as it represents not just my dedication to personal growth but also my commitment to breaking barriers.
I’ve learned that there will always be individuals who attempt to undermine your achievements, often stemming from their struggles and insecurities. However, I firmly believe that the only person in control of your life is you. In the face of adversity, I’ve chosen to rise above negativity and stay focused on my goals.
What I want the world to know about me is that resilience, determination, and courage can shape a remarkable journey, regardless of your circumstances. My brand embodies the spirit of overcoming challenges and embracing opportunities, encouraging others to pursue their passions without fear. My story is one of transformation and empowerment, and I hope to inspire others to take control of their destinies and strive for greatness.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Throughout my middle and high school journey, I was fortunate to have the unwavering support of two incredible individuals: Tom Hough, my Boys and Girls Club Director, and Janice Shofner, my 4-H Leader. Their positive influence and genuine commitment to my growth were truly pivotal in shaping the person I am today.
Tom Hough didn’t just run a program; he created a nurturing environment where young people could thrive. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he consistently went above and beyond to ensure that I and my peers felt valued and motivated. He taught us the importance of staying in school and pursuing our dreams, emphasizing that our education was the key to our futures. Tom’s belief in our potential gave us the confidence to push through challenges and strive for excellence.
Similarly, Janice Shofner played a crucial role in my development. As my 4-H Leader, she instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and the importance of community service. Her passion for fostering leadership skills and promoting teamwork opened many doors for me, allowing me to explore my interests and develop new abilities. Janice always made me feel supported and empowered, encouraging me to embrace my unique strengths and contributions.
Without the guidance and encouragement from Tom and Janice, I genuinely have no idea where I would be today. Their impact on my life was profound; they not only helped me navigate my educational journey but also taught me valuable life lessons about empathy, hard work, and perseverance. I am eternally grateful to both of them for shaping my path and helping me envision a brighter future, filled with promise and possibility.
