Meet Spence

We had the good fortune of connecting with Spence and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Spence, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Becoming a producer and DJ was more of a happenstance for me vs something I planned and thought out honestly. I always loved what I did, but I never stepped out and shown anything I had made. Once I stepped outside and presented myself as a producer/DJ, people found out about my craft and then the opportunities came.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a local producer and DJ in the city of Cincinnati. As far as production goes, my sound has always been described as “Different.” I like spacey, ethereal sounds in my production. I believe that’s what makes my sound stand out from others. As for being a DJ? I think my chronic overthinking has helped tremendously in that department. It helps me be prepared for whatever I may come across when I’m out gigging.
I’m just excited that I’m here, producing tracks for amazing artists and Djing. It’s hard to believe sometimes.
The road hasn’t been necessarily smooth. I recently lost someone who I was very close to, and it left a pretty big void in my life. I spent a lot of time alone trying to figure out how to fill that void. But in the end, I realized that void just needed to be filled with more love and grace for myself. That, and surrounding myself with fellow creatives. I’ve learned so much about myself from consuming their art and has helped me become more versatile as a producer and DJ.
If anything, I’d just want folks to know that all you have to do is take that first step. It sounds cliche but that’s really all it takes. I didn’t believe it until I did it myself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely go to any events Imaniii Productions or Adventure Club had that week. There’s alway something fun going on. These events are often happening at local bars and venues, so it would be a good opportunity to check out some of those places as well. There’s always local artists playing and food vendors at these events also, so it’s a great way to get an all around feel for the vibe of Cincy. I always recommend Jungle Jim’s also. Its such an interesting store and there’s a lot to look at.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
1000% have start with an artist in the city who goes by Ant Allik. He booked me for my first gig which was the first time people saw me as a DJ. This snowballed into many other opportunities. He also introduced me to Siri Imani, CEO of Imaniii Productions which has led to a slew of opportunities to produce and DJ. Huge shoutout to Siri Imani and Triiibe. If it weren’t for the experiences she’s put together in the city, I don’t know where I’d be as a producer or DJ.
