We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Kalil and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ty, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It is quite literally the only thing that brings me consistent joy. Even when things aren’t working out creatively, music often times solves its own conflicts. It’s all I think about when I wake up. How can I use my creativity to push the needle forward. Nothing gives me that satisfaction like music does.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I had always created. Primarily just drawing as a kid. I started making music when I was 16 years old. I had to overcome a lot of shyness to get better at this craft. That was a really big struggle for me because I lacked confidence and grew up reserved. But I stay persistent with that and start blossoming. When I graduated high school I decided to not attend college and just do music. It was really hard to even build up any traction for various reasons. Mainly because I was so scared to try. But a life lived through fear is a life half lived. So over the past couple years I’ve gradually broken out of that shell. You have to fully embrace the change if you want to reap the rewards from it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m honestly just a home body. If the Citadel has something going on I’ll pull up for sure. I typically just put stuff together for everybody to do as well. Even in like less serious situations I’m the curator of a good time. But that’s because I wasn’t allowed to just leave the house as a kid so I grew up with no burning desire to see the world. I just like to do me and whatever I cross paths with will surely give some type of experience. I just love being around my peoples above all else. I honestly could care less where we’re at or what we’re doing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be here without God’s persistence and grace. Constantly giving me the guidance to overcome any obstacles. Blessing me the ability and opportunity to be great every single day. God is quite literally the greatest gift of life.
