We had the good fortune of connecting with Zalma and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zalma, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
There’s no way I would be where I am without taking risks. For me, risk goes hand in hand with intuition. When you’re creating your own path or doing something unconventional, it often takes time before the results show you that what you’re doing is actually working – so it requires a lot of trust and faith in the process.

I’ve learned to recognize when a “risk” feels right. What may appear impulsive on the outside has usually come after a lot of deep consideration and tuning in to my inner guidance. That inner clarity is what allows me to take bold steps forward, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I sing, write, and produce. The journey has been anything but easy lol. honestly, it’s been rough at times but I’m deeply grateful for the strength, resilience, and empathy it’s carved out of me. I’m especially proud of my newest project, Things I’ve learned on earth – it’s the first project I produced entirely on my own, and it marks my return to music after taking time away.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you have to integrate your professional life with your personal life. For a long time, I centered my entire identity around music, but I’ve grown to see it as one beautiful part of who I am, not the whole. I’ve learned to make space for rest, family, friends, and other passions and that balance has made my art even more meaningful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Yess! In no particular order: I would at least be sure to take them through the Metro Parks, the Cleveland Museum of Art, The Judith, Edgewater and Huntington Beach, Il Rione, Patron Saint, Westside Market, and shops in Lakewood.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely have to shout out my friends and family. I’m so grateful to have people I can turn to for support in so many different ways. Especially during my time living in LA, my best friend and roommate, Hannah, was instrumental… always cheering me on and being such a grounding, guiding light as I navigated my journey in music. I wouldn’t be where I am without the love and encouragement of the people around me.
