The Risk Series: how do you think about risk?

Risk is the most common topic that comes up in our conversations with entrepreneurs and so each week we ask entrepreneurs to talk to us on the record about how they think about risk.
I think about risks as the scare tactic and barrier to happiness, success, and freedom. Risks charge our emotions in ways that can chase us away from or towards our dreams. I think risk is necessary for the reward, as rewards do not come easily and certainly are not free. Read more>>
When discussing risk, we often focus on the thrill that the decision may evoke. Risk is really about the measure of our potential failure. The greater our perceived chance to fail, the greater our perceived risk. We often think actively about risk at the start of new things. We associate it with adventure and growth. Risk-taking is a part of my DNA, and I naturally tend to jump into new things. I like the adventure and the chance to realize the possibility of “what if.” I credit risk-taking with many of the outstanding experiences I have had in my life, traveling around the world, my education, building companies, and even taking a sabbatical on a remote island in the South Pacific (this was when I had my first will put in place). I’ve understood the cliche, “the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward” or ” nut guts no glory”. So with all my risk, I’ve had to sit, think and make sure they were calculated risk. Trying to decide which risk would be the most beneficial, not even speaking monetary wise all the time either. But risking time off my 9-5 by calling into work but putting a lot of time into my art. Taking a risk I feel is very essential to anyone pursuing their dream career, or dream in general of who they want to become and what they want to do. But once you second guess your risk you’ll lose your chance because that plants the seed for self doubt. Then you won’t even take the risk. But also knowing every risk won’t come with a reward but you have to take it anyway because with every loss there’s a lesson attached to it. So risk has played a huge part and led to where I am currently and the reward has been big. Taking risk creates the opportunity instead of waiting for it. Read more>>
