Meet Dr. Austin Foguth | Physical Therapist & Founder/Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Austin Foguth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Austin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to create a place where athletes and active individuals could get one-on-one, personalized care that gets to the root cause of their pain. But I didn’t want the care to stop at just pain relief. My goal for all my patients is to come back stronger, healthier, and more confident than they were before the injury. I knew that owning my own practice would allow me the freedom to spend the necessary time with each patient, provide customized treatments with no restrictions, and integrate strength training programs so people can experience a holistic approach to health and fitness.
Additionally, my experience as an athlete and my experience in the traditional healthcare system has influenced my desire to start my own business. As someone who’s been an athlete my whole life, I know firsthand how frustrating it is to deal with injuries and not feel truly understood by the person treating you. When I started working in traditional clinics, I saw how limiting the system could be for active people. The appointments were shared with others, insurance dictated treatments, and there seemed to be a “one-size-fits-all” approach. I knew there had to be a better way to truly challenge people in therapy and provide customized plans tailored to their unique goals, because everyone’s needs and aspirations are different.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SCOR Performance and Recovery is a cash-based sports physical therapy clinic built for competitive athletes and active individuals looking to address their nagging pain, become stronger, and improve their performance. What sets us apart is the personalized care we provide. We don’t rely on insurance to dictate how we treat patients. Instead, we spend quality one-on-one time with each person, get to the root of the problem, and create a plan that actually works for them.
What I’m most proud of is all the problems I get to help my patients solve. There’s nothing better than seeing someone smile as their pain subsides and they realize they’re moving better and getting stronger. That moment when everything starts to click is what keeps me going.
The road to get here wasn’t easy. I didn’t come from a business background, so starting a brick-and-mortar clinic was completely new to me. Therefore, I built connections, asked a lot of questions, and kept my focus on serving people well. The challenges that come with owning a business have taught me patience, persistence, and the importance of staying true to your mission. I’ve also learned that you don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to be willing to take the next step and keep showing up.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about SCOR Performance and Recovery, it’s that it’s not just about rehab. We help you not only get out of pain, but also become a stronger, healthier version of yourself. We’re focused on long-term success and helping people pursue true longevity in fitness and in life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’ll definitely be hitting some of my favorite local spots starting with breakfast at The Blue Door Café & Bakery, hands down the best breakfast around. For lunch or dinner options, I would recommend some amazing pizza at Merriman Valley Pizza, and then head to Leo’s Italian Restaurant for up-scale Italian cuisine. Of course, we can’t skip dessert, so Pav’s Creamery is a must for ice cream.
I also love supporting local coffee shops, so I’ll be making stops at Portal West, Porchlight, Artisan, and Heartwood. Each one has its own vibe and great coffee. If there’s a band I love in town, you’ll find me at Blossom Music Center. It’s one of the best venues around. And since I’m all about staying active, we’ll definitely get in a run or bike ride on the Metro Parks trails. It’s one of my favorite ways to enjoy the area.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are definitely some people that I would love to give a shoutout to who have been with me and supported me throughout this whole journey! First and foremost, I want to give God the glory for guiding me, connecting me with the right people, and providing for me every step of the way. I’ve never considered myself a ‘businessman,’ so launching a brick-and-mortar physical therapy clinic was a big leap that required a lot of faith and help.
One of the key people in that process was Josh Manley, who I met through a friend’s referral. That connection turned out to be instrumental. Josh pointed me in the right direction at every stage, from navigating insurance and banking to leasing space and even introducing me to Acropolis Health, a crucial referral partner that has been with me since the very beginning.
I’m also incredibly grateful for my family, who have always encouraged me, especially during the most challenging moments. My wife, Mary, has been a huge blessing throughout this process as she continues to support me through this crazy journey.
Academically, I have to thank Ohio University’s Physical Therapy program for giving me the education and clinical experience to enter the field with confidence. I’m deeply appreciative of my professors and everything I learned during my time there. It truly helped shape the clinician I am today.
