We had the good fortune of connecting with Eden McCloud and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eden, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I originally began the process of starting my own business 2020, straight out of high school. I’ve known I wanted to be my own boss as long as I can remember, and have a life I was passionate about living. Owning a photography business has given me that and so much more. I knew it would be challenging, but that just made it more exciting to me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In the wedding photography world, I specialize in documentary style photos and 35mm film.

Documentary style photos are beautiful to me because they feel authentic and true to the wedding day and what was happening at that moment. I love to let my clients be present and relaxed knowing that they don’t have to pose and force a smile all day to still have beautiful photos to look back on.

I’m most proud of my 35mm film work and how much it has progressed over the past couple of years. Starting with a disposable camera, to now shooting fully manual, it was most challenging because a couple of years ago I didn’t know many other people, especially in Columbus who were shooting film. Film, to me, really encapsulates how real life feels to look at and captures the kind of nostalgia that family photos albums give us. That’s the feeling I looking for my art to emulate. Humans being their beautiful human selves.

Recently, I’ve added Super 8, film video, to my services. It gives the same feeling as 35mm film, but in motion. I’m very excited to be able to document love in another timeless and beautiful way.

Photography is definitely an industry that makes you be okay with change, and there’s always something to learn. It hasn’t been easy, but it has been fun, and has connected me with some truly amazing humans and artists. I’ve learned to be okay with asking questions, and with changing when it’s needed. Showing up as myself in my business has become imperative, because when you try to put on a show, that’s when it leads to burnout and is no longer the sustainable dream life you worked for.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Columbus is home to some amazing places. I would take a friend to some of my favorite coffee shops, One Line, Pistachia Vera, or Roosevelts, and then on a walk around Scioto Mile or German Village. You can’t go wrong with the Short North Market, Budd Dairy Hall, or Late Night Slice. I also really enjoy the main Columbus Library, Franklin Park Conservatory, and the Columbus Museum of Art. Magnolia Thunderpussy and the Bookloft are also on my favorites list.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Mom has always supported artistic pursuits, and never made me feel like I couldn’t do anything I set my mind to.
My husband has been with me from the beginning of picking up a camera to now, and has offered the best support and encouragement I could have hoped for.
Many more seasoned photographers have answered many of my questions and showed me so much wisdom and support.
