We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Karst and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor is always being on the lookout for a niche in the market. You stay curious and aware and you will find a hole. Then you make the thing to fills that hole. Every time I’ve had big business growth, that mindset has been behind it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It was definitely NOT easy. When I was 18 I told my parents I would be a principal before I was 27. I was hungry for it and I was told “no” a lot before I landed my job. I embraced the cringe of deciding I was an influencer before anyone followed me. I learned that in your career if you want it – you can likely get it – you just have to be willing to be relentless and fail forward.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
EASY. This city is so alive and I for one LOVE exploring the Columbus food scene. So, we would start with a bakery hop around German Village on a Saturday. We would hit the farmer’s market, Pistacia Vera for a croissant, Fox in the Snow for a cappuccino, Stauf’s just to smell the air, Kitty Cakes for a scone, and a power walk around Schiller Park to burn it off. Then we would go play a few rounds of pickleball before heading to Littleton’s for a salad and caviar french fries. Then we would go home and get very gussied up for drinks at Goodale Station (you MUST order the Old Fashioned) and dinner at Pelino’s Pasta. Heaven.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My career success is studded with the presence of women who believed in me. Aileen Miracle got me my first big job and introduced me to the world of teacher influencing. Samantha Chatman believed that at 26 with only 5 years of teaching experience, I would be a great principal. Michelle Banks championed my role as a mother and mentored me toward a nuanced work/life balance. Jacki Prati taught me to be brave.
